Abstract
Taking into consideration some theoretical definitions made by short-story writers such as Juan Bosch, Julio Cortázar, Edgar Allan Poe, etc., the author of this article (a writer of short- stories himself) analyzes the role and the functioning of narrative tension as a formal feature in modern short-stories. He
differentiates between the “visible side of the story”, which is conformed by a series of “distractors”, and the “hidden story”
that is only suggested throughout the text and not entirely revealed until the end. The narrative tension produced by these
distractors throughout the story makes the reader create expectations regarding the meaning of the story as a whole.
